Evening all from Lucerne Switzerland.
Unable to post yesterday as no access to internet and unfortunately there is no wireless access in this hotel so I will not be posting any pics.
Thursday was a great day. The weather was wonderful and the Rhine cruise was marvellous. The Rhine is a busy commercial river. It flows north fast and we were headed south slowly. On the boat for over 9 hours and I don't think we travelled more than 100 kilometers. Not a lot of pleasure craft but lots of barges and cruise ships. The scenery was outstanding with a castle round every river bend and lots of picturesque little towns and villages. The boat made around 12 stops on its way downstream. We sat on the sun deck the whole way except when we went to the dining room for lunch.
We arrived in Mainz at around 8:00 and Una will no doubt take credit for finding our hotel as she committed the cardinal sin and asked someone for directions. I have no doubt whatsoever that I could have found the hotel on my own. The hotel was lovely and close to the train station. We went out for supper and had pizza on a patio.
The train stations here are incredible...magnificent shops, fast food outlets and information kiosks. Before we boarded the train this morning for Lucerne, we bought sandwiches in the train station and snacked on board. Today's train journey was interesting although nothing like yesterday's cruise. The scenery improved once we got into Switzerland. We found our hotel easily. We are nicely located downtown only 3 minutes from the train station and right on Lake Lucerne. We have booked a tour for tomorrow which will take up the whole day, travelling by bus and train up into the Alps. We are really looking forward to it and hope the weather stays fine as it was again today....still in shorts and Tshirt and we ate supper outside again tonight on a patio...we are just in and it is 10:00 pm as I bang this out on the hotel computer.
Lucerne is a lovely city and we have swans swimming in the lake right outside our door.
Hope everyone is well. Keep posting comments...its great to read them.
I'll try and post pics later...there's a Starbucks next door and I'll see if I can get logged on there.
Bye for now...
