We travelled by train yesterday from Rome to Naples, a short 2 hour trip. Naples did not impress us as we arrived on the train and we were a little apprehensive on arrival as we were unsure of the connection to Sorrento. As soon as we got off the train, some guy grabs our bags, says Sorrento train leaves in 6 minutes and he starts running along the platform with us trying to keep up. This way and that until he presents us at the ticket window, tells us how much for tickets (apparently our Eurail passes are not accepted on this local Circumvesuvio), and then down the platform steps where the train has just pulled in. 20 euros he tells me.....fat chance I tell him...I already had 5 euros in my hand for him. He was insistent so I gave him another euro, threw our cases on the train and left him complaining as the doors closed.
The local train takes about an hour to Sorrento. We got talking to a mother and daughter who were from New Zealand and had just finished up a 2 week Trafalgar Tour. Of course we missed our stop...had to get off at the next one and find a taxi to take us back. The taxi eventually found our B&B but not without some difficulty and tricky maneuvering...at one point he had to fold in the mirrors on both sides to navigate the impossibly narrow streets.
In any event we arrived at our B&B, Orchid Corner. The quaintest place you have ever seen.
We were warmly welcomed by the owner, Carmela, and immediately given a bottle of wine to enjoy while she chatted with us and explained the arrangements. The room is lovely, opening on to a garden /terrace where breakfast is served. Lots of plants and flowers including orchids, no doubt where the B&B name came from.
The view is spectacular, with towering cliffs and lime and orange trees. After we were settled we walked to the beach, about 5 minutes away and picked up a couple of bottles of local wine on the way back...a bargain at 1.30 euros each. We then went out for supper, ending up at a local Pizzeria where we shared a lovely pizza and a bottle of wine. The bill was 7.70 euros! Back at the B&B we sat on the terrace with a couple from England, Gareth and Heather, and drank some more wine. It rained overnight...quite heavily with thunder and lightning and this morning is a bit cooler with rain threatening. We have no plans for today outside of sitting on this lovely terrace and recharging our batteries.
Hi everyone it's me, Una. We had a lovely breakfast out here on the patio. Its really lovely here, so peaceful & just a few minutes walk to the beach. Our room is really gorgeous....yellow walls, lovely bedding & we each were given a lovely bath robe.
The patio is so quaint it reminds me a bit of Helen & Jimmy's garden in Pittenweem & our landlady Carmela is a real treat, I asked her where I could find a laundrette & she just offered to do it for us ......this is the life. Last night we sat outside till "yon" time chatting to the young couple who arrived yesterday too. Thank goodness we can rest today ... we have walked our feet up to our knees & now its time to relax & I for one do not want to go inside another @#@#@ church or look at any more bloody pictures or statues of naked men for a very long time!!!!. Simba baby girl I'm glad you have made yourself at home with Julie, Looks like you are getting spoiled ...gees she's even giving you treats... you are a lucky girl.
"Suitcase"... you are too funny for words what a laugh you gave us both this morning.
well ciao ciao for now XXX

Suitcase says.........
What a nightmare today! I was nearly abducted by some mad Italian who wanted 20 euros for a ransom. What a cheek I'm worth a lot more than that but Brian didn't think so and only paid 6.
I was unceremoniously dumped inside the carriage and I'm sure my handles were stretched.
Still, glad to know that Brian was prepared to put up a fight if not money!
I had a chat with an old bag(not Una hee hee) today who told me that when the holiday is over I will end up in the attic at home.I know this isn't true. I will have pride of place in the basement with Brian.....and he might even get to see my secret zipper.

Loved all the photos but particularly the ones from Rome that brought back good memories of my trip there. Can't wait to see you on Saturday and hear all the news first hand. Iain says that he is pleased you have found Skype so good he has been using it for ages and is a skype missionary here in Scotland.
lots of love
Celia
Let's see if I got this right? Brian tells women to put their pants on, Una doesn't want to see statues of naked men .... and Suitcase is trying to avoid the reality that sooner or later he/she is going to have to go back into the closet and play in solitary with that secret zipper.
Wow ....... sounds like a perfect script for "As the World Turns/Coronation St/Crossroads/The Archers" ....
PS Brian, next time anyone tries that stunt on you, yell (phonetically) after him what he probably yelled at you as the train was pulling out:
'Vaffanculo!"
Thank you for calling today. I'm going to give the kids a big hug and kiss from both. You and Mum are surly missed Sean still looks at the postcard and says Grandad. We went to see Uncle Tom on Sunday he is doing great. Debi
Hi Brian & Una,
I am really enjoying this Blog. Brian, I think you should consider writing a book. You know, just like "My year in Provence" or "under a Tuscan Sun" !!! You have a gift for writing. Now we know how you got all those cockememy credits approved!!!
Talk to you soon.

GREAT trip so far guys. Love your commentary. I just wonder what Generat Custer would think of all of this. LOLOL
It sounds like you are having a fabulous time. Retirement sure has its perks!! We are missing you both very much. We received your post card and the photo is beautiful. Your room looks gorgeous and it sounds like a super place to settle in for a much need rest. Katie had a horse show on Sunday and another one coming up this Sunday, then the show season will be over for the year!! She is making a ton of new friends at Canterbury and seems to be in her element there. She will post soon to give you a further update.
Cheers and take care.
Dear Suitcase -
First time out you've come out I guess(out of the catalog, that is)?
Re-reading the blog I just realized how naive and foolish mass consumer products like you delude themselves into thinking they were being rescued, Quite the contrary, Brian wants to replace you with a nice little piece of leather goods from Firenze and the local Napoli Tally guy actually wanted a minumum of 20Euros to kidnap you permanently (think: sold into European slavery in a Fiat Boot Sale, maybe even swapped for three Daniel O'Donnel CDs), but Brian was only prepared to offer 6Euros to dispose of you. He knew that in a financial pinch you could always get tipped over a cliff for free in Sorrento, not an outrageous scenario, especially after Brian has had a few swallows in Capri.
In future I'd be really careful about complaining to the Blogosphere about your sensitivity to your master's stinky underwear. Better class luggage items all adhere to the path of discretion (think about the motto of Las Vegas - 'What Happens Here, stays Here"). You have to realize that The Great Manufacturer gave you zippers for a reason - to safeguard your owner's personal issues. Life could be worse. At least you've got years of clean air ahead of you isolated in an air-conditioned closet, whereas Una has to live with this type of biohazardous waist/waste material on a daily basis. If you don't mend your whining, hyper-critical ways you could still be doomed to a life full of Turkish jock straps or Serboa-Croat moustache wax.
Should you need a life role model or two to give you ethical inspiration (no, I don't mean ROLL model), browse my web-site next time you feel the unseemly compulsion to bare what is behind your no doubt Chinese-made zipper.
Sincerely,
Cold Haand
I can't believe it....I just missed your call, I was outside helping Paul work on my car....(ugh cars!!!)and I came in to a message blinking....how nice to hear your voice, you sound so happy, and your trip is sounding amazing. The travel bug will never leave you now....I still have it.
Careful with that pesky suitcase of yours, souonds like it is bursting at the seams ....wouldn't want it
to explode at an inconvenient time, revealing it's contents to Europe.....maybe instead of storing it up in the attic you will have to lend it to other travellers like your niece....I'll take it on a trip through Cambodia....that might make it appreciate the finer travels of Europe.
Take Care!!!
Enjoy yourselves!
Love Jen
P.S It's a god thing you brought your laptop eh!!!!!
